Anand, the State's Accused

Anand's house in Goa, where he lived with his wife, Rama is raided by Pune police. Anand and Rama are in Mumbai at the time and the police enter their home without producing a warrant or obtaining his permission. Houses of 6 activists from five states were also raided on the same day.

Police files an FIR against Anand under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) which is draconian law that makes it extremely difficult for the accused to obtain bail while the investigation and trial against him proceeds.

In a press conference, Maharashtra's Additional Director General of Police Parambir Singh reads out a letter allegedly written by one of the other accused in which there is a reference to one "Comrade Anand". The DGP contends that this is the same as Anand Teltumbde and establishes his links to a member of the banned Maoist organization CPI (Maoist)

Bombay High Court dismisses Anand's plea to quash the FIR against him.

The Supreme Court also dismisses Anand's plea to quash the FIR against him and grants him interim protection from arrest until 11 February, allowing him to approach a competent court to seek anticipatory bail before that date.

Anand’s application for anticipatory bail, which is commonly used as a safeguard for individuals accused of or anticipating arrest for non-bailable offences, is rejected by the Pune District Court.

Shortly after midnight, Pune Police arrests Anand at Mumbai airport. He is released several hours later after a Special Court in Pune rules that his arrest is illegal as it contradicted the Supreme Court order that granted him protection from arrest until 11 February.

Following the state election, BJP government in Maharashtra is replaced by Shiv Sena-NCP combine and Anand's case is transferred from the Pune Police to the National Investigation Agency (NIA)

Supreme Court rejects anticipatory bail plea an directs Anand to surrender to the NIA in 3 weeks.

Anand's plea for interim bail on the grounds of risk to his life from contracting COVID in overcrowded jails and his pre-existing health conditions is denied without an explanation and he was asked to surrender within a week

Anand surrenders to the NIA and offers full cooperation to investigating officers who interrogate him over the next ten days

NIA concludes questioning Anand and request for him to be remanded to judicial custody and sent to Taloja jail located on the outskirts of Mumbai. At the time it came to light that one of the NIA officers at the place Anand was being held was diagnosed to be infected with Coronavirus.

In response to a PIL, it is revealed that an inmate died in Taloja jail on 9th May who was found to have been infected with Coronavirus. However, this news, in addition to similar news from Yerawada and Dhule jails is suppressed

Bombay High Court granted bail to Anand citing there was no prima facie case made against him to support charges under UAPA. His release was stayed for a week to give NIA the time to appeal the decision in the Supreme Court

A bench that included the Chief Justice of India upheld the Bombay High Court's decision granting bail. After some administrative delay, Anand walked out of the Taloja jail and was welcomed by a contingent of family members, friends, and admirers
